The mechanical subteam uses Solidworks to design the custom enclosures, racks, and structures on the sub. Throughout the design process, rigorous finite element analysis is run on each assembly to ensure every part will perform successfully under high loads. Every component is manufactured in house with mills, lathes, and CNC machines to a tolerance of 0.005 inches. Mechanical members then integrate and test all assemblies up to fifty feet underwater.

The electrical subteam works to connect the software running on the main computer with the rest of the sub. They ensure efficiency with the vehicle’s power, sensor, and mechatronics systems. Members design, layout, and populate custom printed circuit boards (PCBs), which all connect via an integrated backplane. This allows the entire backbone of the sub to be modular and nearly identical across vehicles, and improves functionality. Battery management boards allow for reliable monitoring and protection against power spikes.

The software subteam writes all of the code that executes on the sub’s main computer. This includes the vehicle control, computer vision, and much more. They also build auxiliary software such as simulation, visualization, and automation tools that enable us to efficiently develop mission systems that accomplish the requisite task. The software team releases all of their in-house software stack for anyone, including other teams, to learn from and use. Parts or all of the software stack is currently used on many vehicles both in and out of the competition.

The business subteam connects the technical work that the rest of the team does with the outside world. This includes developing the team's website, shooting photos and videos, and getting sponsors to help the team build the best AUVs possible. We also work to create outreach events to give back to the greater Cornell and Ithaca communities. We also design everything including graphics, apparel, sponsorship packets, social media posts, and more!
